According to a recent study in the new England Journal of Medicine, doctors evaluated 42 studies that compared patients taking Avandia to patients not using the drug. The studies included nearly 28,000 patients, 15,560 of whom were taking Avandia. The researchers found that the risk of heart attack was increased 43% among Avandia users. It also showed a 64% increased risk of dying from cardiovascular causes while taking the drug. Food and Drug Administration Scientist told a panel of outside experts recently that the risk combined with the drug's lack of unique short term benefits in helping diabetics control blood sugar means continued sales are not justified. The FDA is also separately working to add a "black box warning" to the labels of Avandia to caution patients about the increased risk of heart failure associated with the drug.
