Civil rights law is the broad category of law from which employment law is drawn. Civil rights are those personal liberties guaranteed to every U. S. citizen, regardless of race, religion, sex, age or disabilities. The moral proposition that civil rights rest on is that no one should be punished for the circumstances into which they were born.

The United States Constitution protects a number of civil rights, the most important of which are:

The right to speak openly and assemble freely in public forums.
The right to be free from false arrest or malicious prosecution.
The right to due process of law, if you are tried in court.
The right to be free from excessive bails and fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.
The right to a speedy and public trial, with a right to a jury in certain cases.
The right to the equal protection of the laws, regardless of your personal circumstances.
The right to privacy from unreasonable and unwarranted government intrusion into your home and personal affairs.

Some of these freedoms are more relevant to employment situations than others, but if your employer has committed a violation of any of your civil rights, there might be an employment law issue at stake.
