Opportunities limited for Kansans with disabilities

In Missouri, many employees struggle with unfair treatment for reasons beyond their control. Some are persecuted for their race or national origin, some are mistreated because of their gender or sexuality, others are singled out for their age or other reasons such as religion or even disabilities. Whatever the reason behind it, discrimination is unacceptable and should not be tolerated at work, or anywhere else.

However, it is a sad truth that discrimination has become a fact of life for many employees. With too few other work opportunities, many decide to just put up with the mistreatment for fear of losing their job if they complain. Others struggle to find work at all, being turned down for reasons unrelated to the job.

In Kansas, there is an ongoing initiative that aims to help more Kansans with disabilities to find work. According to reports, fewer than 20 percent were employed as of October 2014. Part of the issue may be discrimination. One woman described the emotional challenge of going through a discrimination filing after being unfairly dismissed from her job. Her feeling is that a lack of support makes the situation worse.

However, it is hoped that by providing support through the application process and assistance with other barriers such as transportation, they may help more workers with disabilities to find and maintain employment.

Of course, for some, the issue simply lies with the employer. No matter how hard you work, you may find that your employer or supervisor mistreats you because of your disability. If so, you may be entitled to compensation. An attorney could be the ally you need at this difficult time. He or she can advise you about your options and may be able to support you if you decide to file a discrimination claim.
