Head-on collisions a danger for Missouri drivers

All drivers who make the decision to get behind the wheel do so with the understanding that there are certain risks inherent in road travel. Many of us take steps to ensure that we are driving in a safe and responsible manner. We keep our cars properly maintained, avoid driving after drinking and make every effort to follow the rules of the road. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done to reduce the risks associated with the behavior of others, as evidenced by one of Missouri's most recent head-on collisions.

Upon early investigation, police believe that the incident took place in the early morning hours of a recent Monday. Two drivers were headed in opposing directions near the intersection of Highway 291 and Moss Avenue in Liberty, Missouri. Neither was able to avoid a head-on collision.

The 20-year-old driver of one of the vehicles sustained severe injuries in the crash. He was unable to survive, and died as a result of those injuries. It is unclear whether he lost his life at the scene of the crash or was able to receive emergency medical treatment before he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also severely injured, but survived. There is no word on his current condition or prognosis for recovery.

When head-on collisions such as the one outlines here take place, Missouri police begin a thorough investigation into the events that led up to the incident. Teams evaluate the scene, interview any witnesses or survivors and look closely at lab results from blood or tissue samples. In many cases, the authorities are able to reach a determination as to which party was responsible for the crash, and criminal charges can follow. In this case, such a determination could also lead to a wrongful death or personal injury suit, depending on the outcome.
