Is your employer obliged to protect you from harassment?

Experiencing unfair treatment at work is a horrible thing and one that can be extremely distressing. A hostile work environment can make your job very difficult and have a significant negative effect on your mood and your general well-being. Yet unlike some uncomfortable situations, it is often not as simple as just walking away. You still want to do your job, yet this means exposure to unfair treatment. Sadly, all too many employees in Missouri experience this every day.

This should not be the case. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and fairness in their place of work and, indeed, in their day-to-day lives. If you are experiencing harassment or discrimination at work, it is important to report it as soon as you feel able to do so. It can be difficult to talk about your experiences at times, yet doing so may enable your situation to be improved.

By law, your employer also has certain obligations to protect employees from such treatment,, as this article on harassment explains. They should provide training about sexual harassment in order to raise awareness and reduce the occurrence of such acts. They are also required to take complaints seriously, keep an eye out for signs of harassment in their workplace and to produce clear policies regarding harassment for everyone to abide by.

If you are experiencing sexual harassment at work, going to your employer could be the first step. However, if you receive no assistance, you might want to file a lawsuit against those responsible for your discomfort. An attorney can advise you about your options and may be able to help you with making your claim.
