The fast-food chain Chick-fil-A, a once lesser-known eatery depending on where you live has recently attained national status — but not necessarily for the right reasons. The chief of operations of the company recently released a statement sharing his beliefs concerning same-sex marriage.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation — more commonly referred to as GLAAD — was notably upset with the comments, but that is not all that the group spoke out against. The group recently obtained a copy of a lawsuit filed against Chick-fil-A. In the lawsuit, a female employee state that she was harassed and discriminated against based on her gender. After enduring both of those, her employment was terminated.
Some of the individual comments made towards her poked fun at her female attributes as well as associating them with negative-work traits. When discussing replacing the woman with a male employee, her supervisor said it was better, “you know, because guys don’t have all that baby-making liability stuffed into their abdomens.”
Although her performance reviews had described her as a “satisfactory-to-above satisfactory” worker, her employment was terminated and she was indeed replaced by a male worker. In fact, the lawsuit claims that on June 27, 2011, the owner of the establishment she worked at stated that she was fired for her benefit, to be a “stay home mother,” something she reportedly did not ask for.
Not only did the woman say that she personally suffered harassing comments, but that there was an entire pattern of discrimination against women.
